Crispy, cheesy smashed potatoes loaded with bacon and BBQ sauce!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you hadn\u2019t clicked on already, these beauties are inspired by the British pub classic Hunters Chicken<\/a>! Because is there any greater combination of BBQ, cheese and bacon? Well, there certainly is when you get potatoes involved \ud83d\ude1b Follow me\u2026<\/p>\n

Preparing Smashed Potatoes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Every time I make smashed potatoes, I\u2019m always reminded of how awesome they are in comparison to regular roasted potatoes. By smashing the potatoes you increase the surface area of the potato<\/strong>, which results in the potatoes turning extra crispy<\/strong>. Plus, smashing potatoes is incredibly therapeutic too.<\/p>\n

What kind of potatoes to use?<\/em><\/h3>\n

I highly recommend using\u00a0baby potatoes<\/strong>. Some recipes use slightly larger varieties, but I find the smaller the spud the crispier they\u2019ll be. Plus baby potatoes will cook a lot quicker too.<\/p>\n

Boiling\/Steaming the potatoes<\/h3>\n

The best way to prep the potatoes so they\u2019re ready to be smashed is to boil them. Once they\u2019re fork tender, I recommend then letting them steam dry<\/strong> for 5 or so minutes. This will help some of the moisture escape<\/strong> the potatoes and help them crisp up<\/strong> in the oven.<\/p>\n

Process shots: add potatoes to salted water and boil (photo 1), drain and steam dry (photo 2), add to baking tray (photo 3).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Cheesy Smashed Potatoes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Once you\u2019ve added the potatoes to a tray, you\u2019ll want to coat them in olive oil<\/strong> and a simple seasoning mix of smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper<\/strong>. Then, it\u2019s time to smash!<\/p>\n

How do you smash potatoes?<\/em><\/h3>\n

Press down on the potatoes until they\u2019re flat. You\u2019ll want to smash them fairly thin, but not so much that they break apart. I typically use a mug or measuring cup to do this.<\/p>\n

From there, top with a pinch of cheddar<\/strong> and roast until deep golden and crispy!<\/p>\n

Process shots: add seasoning and oil to potatoes (photo 1), toss (photo 2), smash potatoes (photos 3&4), add cheese (photo 5), bake (photo 6).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Can I use a different cheese?<\/em><\/h3>\n

Cheddar is the classic option for Hunters Chicken, so I definitely recommend using it here. Plus it crisps up really well and adds heaps of flavour.<\/p>\n

What else could I use to smash the potatoes?<\/em><\/h3>\n

If I haven\u2019t got a large-based mug on hand, I typically just use a fork or spatula, but honestly, any sort of flat utensil will do the trick!<\/p>\n

How thin should I smash the potatoes?<\/em><\/h3>\n

The thinner you smash them, the crispier they\u2019ll be. I typically smash as thin as I can get them without them falling apart, but you could keep them a little thicker if you\u2019d prefer<\/p>\n

Serving Hunters Smashed Potatoes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Once the smashed potatoes are out of the oven, you can go ahead and drizzle will BBQ sauce<\/strong>, then sprinkle with crispy bacon<\/strong> and fresh chives<\/strong>. I typically serve these in two different contexts:<\/p>\n

  1. Finger Food<\/strong> \u2013 These work great as\u00a0Finger Food<\/a>\u00a0with a\u00a0Dip<\/a> (here I\u2019ve just used sour cream, but check out my Dips<\/a> for more inspo).<\/li>\n
  2. Side<\/strong> \u2013 You can also serve them as a Side.<\/a>\u00a0Chicken Tenders<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Chicken Drumsticks<\/a>\u00a0work really well!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
